Understanding ZESA Tariffs: A Guide to Your Electricity Bill
Managing your electricity consumption and understanding the corresponding tariffs is crucial for budgeting effectively. The Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA) has a tiered pricing structure for electricity, with rates increasing as consumption rises. This post will break down the ZESA tariffs to help you make sense of your bill and manage your electricity usage efficiently.
ZESA Tariffs Breakdown
ZESA’s tariff structure is designed to charge progressively higher rates as your electricity consumption increases. Here is a detailed look at the tariffs based on kilowatt-hours (kWh) consumed and the corresponding amounts in Zimbabwean Dollars (ZWG):
Units | Tariff in ZWG | Tariff incl 6% RE Levy | Total Price In ZWG | Tariff in Rands | Price in Rands |
0-50 kWh | 1.1 | 1.17 | ZWG58.3 | R1.59 | R43.14 |
51-100 kWh | 1.24 | 1.32 | ZWG65.72 | R1.79 | R89.50 |
101-200 kWh | 2.2 | 2.34 | ZWG233.2 | R3.17 | R317.00 |
201-300 kWh | 3.17 | 3.37 | ZWG3336.02 | R4.56 | R168.35 |
301-400 kWh | 3.44 | 3.65 | ZWG364.64 | R4.94 | R367.41 |
401+ | 3.58 | 3.80 | R5.14 |
How to Calculate Your Bill
To calculate your electricity bill, determine the total kWh consumed within the billing period and apply the corresponding tariff. For example, if you consume 350 kWh in a month, your bill will be calculated as follows:
- First 50 kWh: ZWG 58.30 (R79.50)
- Next 50 kWh (51-100 kWh): ZWG 65.72 (R89.50)
- Next 100 kWh (101-200 kWh): ZWG233.20 (R317)
- Next 100 kWh (201-300 kWh): ZWG336 (R454.05)
- Next 100 kWh (301-400 kWh): ZWG364.64 (R491.89)
- 401kWh+ Multiply the number of units by ZWG3.80 or R5.14 depending on the currency you are using.
Example
If it is your first purchase for the month and you want 375 units, this is the break down: 50 units at R79.50
+ 50 Units at R89.50
+100 units at R317
+100 units at R454.05
+ 75 x R4.94(from table) =R370.5
Total cost for R375 units would therefore be R1310.55
